What’s with the blog?
I have a terrible memory, so this is a way to accomplish several things. I’ll often try a food or a restaurant, make a mental note to tell my friends about it, and promptly forget. Or, even worse, I’ve imagined a conversation that did not exist. (Does this make me sound crazy? I’m really not. Really.) I also experiment with food, and this way I can remember what I’ve made and how I’ve tweaked the recipes. If you’re lucky, you’ll get entertaining pictures of the resulting abomination.
Aside from that, I’ll post about interesting or amusing food-related things I come across.
Apparently you’re a fan of food now.
Yeah, pretty much. I’ve always enjoyed food, but living in LA and Berkeley spoiled me. I didn’t know what I was missing until two things happened:
1. I moved to Davis in 2005. Don’t get me wrong: I have had good food here and in Sacramento. Maybe I just haven’t found the amazing yet affordable places, and of course I’d be happy to try out a place if people recommend it to me. But I’d make the 90 minute trip to the Bay Area just for the food.
2. Chronic heartburn, accompanied by fun things like irreversible esophageal damage! Several doctors advised me to change my diet. Here are some foods I’m supposed to avoid now:
- Coffee - you know, I’ve tried to quit three times and I can’t do it. Coffee is one of my favorite things in life. Once I had my first cup of truly good coffee, there was no going back.
- Other acidic foods such as onions, citrus fruits, and tomatoes - look, you’re talking to someone who, as a child, ate raw onion slices and lemons like candy. I still do these things occasionally.
- Spicy foods - like coffee, spicy food is an essential part of life.
- Fatty foods - finally, something I don’t mind cutting down on…although I do love my fish and chips.
I can’t think of anything else to put here.
